Last year I attended the One Of A Kind Spring Market in Toronto with one of my friends.

I have attended this show many times. But on this visit, I decided to observe how artisans interacted with the us. Keep in mind this is the biggest handmade show in Canada! I was surprised to see what I did! Keep reading!

You spend a lot of time preparing for an in person market and the last thing you want is to come home feeling disheartened. 

Sometimes without realizing it, we create little moments that make customers feel uncomfortable. 

The good news is there are simple ways to change how people experience your booth.

Let's talk about 3 ways you might be scaring customers away (without knowing it).

This one is super common. Maybe the market is a little slow so you decide to check your phone. But to a customer it looks like you're not interested in engaging with them.

Instead think of yourself as part of the display.  Stay present in the moment and make gentle eye contact with the customer. You can be adjusting your display if that makes it easier for you.

I have witnessed this one multiple times where I have walked up to a table and the maker is right across from me. I have looked at the products without even a "Hello" said to me.

When someone doesn't acknowledge them, it can come across as unwelcoming. And just like that...they leave.

​Instead give them a smile, eye contact and say "Hi there!".  Even if your both is busy, try to say "Hi" to as many customers as possible.

When my friend and I were turning a corner at the OOAK show,  suddenly a maker tried to get our attention by showing us what they were selling. You feel pressure that you need to come in even though you hadn't planned to.

Instead allow customers to come to you. Let them browse and take things in on their own time. A warm welcome is always a good place to start and then give them space.

When your booth feels calm and welcoming, customers will generally stay longer. People are there to make connections to what you are selling.

Ever wonder why a bracelet cord ends up looking discoloured? If you notice your elastic turning yellow or brown, it's a warning sign that your beads and silver are also at risk.

It's important to wear your sunscreen and your lotions to care for your skin. Just remember to remove your bracelets before applying, let the cream soak in and then roll the bracelets back on.

I know how much we all love using essential oils for that extra bit of calm or energy throughout the day! It’s so tempting to dab a drop onto your bracelet, but you have to be careful—most gemstones don't actually like oils. To keep your jewelry safe, stick to 'diffuser beads' like Lava or Wood. These are naturally porous, so they’ll soak up your favorite scent beautifully without damaging the rest of your stones. 

Accidents happen! If your favorite bracelet ever snaps, please don’t toss the pieces in the trash. As long as your gemstones are still in good shape, I’m more than happy to restring it for you. Even if a few beads got damaged in the fall, we can always add some new ones for a small fee to get it back on your wrist.
And don't give up on the silver, either! Take a look at the heart charm in the photo—can you believe it’s actually a few years old? With a little cleaning, a fresh polish, and a touch of patina to make the stamp pop, I can make your silver charms look brand new again.

Jewelry is getting more expensive every day, so let’s make sure yours lasts! I hope these tips help you keep your bracelets in 'just-bought' condition.

Catherine is a member mixed media artist who enjoys taking inspiration from nature, specifically the trails and conservation areas where she lives in Hamilton, Ontario.

Catherine has always had a creative soul and really started coming back into it in 2018 . Starting out as a strictly alcohol ink artist, she pivoted last year to include paintings of moody skies and flowers found during her nature walks. She also has an affinity for painting the night sky.

Quite often Catherine looks for ways to up cycle and reuse her supplies in an effort to reduce waste. One of her favourite things is to paint on is rough and raw wood slices, which have been taken from branches and trees that have fallen during wind storms.

She also reuses paint from larger pieces and supplies to make her ornament collection during the holiday season.  Nothing makes Catherine smile more than when somebody connects with a piece of her artwork. 

Cheryl designs casual, earthy jewellery made of eco-friendly recycled silver. Using the medium silver metal clay, she creates jewellery that is meant to be worn and enjoyed every day. 

Her jewellery making began as a hobby when her youngest child started school full-time and turned into a small business in 2015.

Her designs are inspired by nature and created from natural elements and textures.  Her work features unique and individually crafted fine silver pendant necklaces, botanical earrings, gemstone bracelets and rings. ​

To celebrate 10 years in business, I created a special collection with bronze metal clay. This was my first time working with this medium. Keep reading to learn more about bronze jewellery and how to care for it.

Bronze clay is made completely from recycled metals. It contains 90% copper and 10% tin. The copper is sourced from power cables which have 99.9% copper. Just like silver metal clay, the metals go through a process where they are transformed into micro powders. Then a binder and water is added to the powders to turn it into metal clay.

Bronze metal will become more golden overtime in the beginning. To continue to have your jewellery remain shiny, I recommend storing it in the ziplock bag that is provided. Oxidation will take many years if the bronze metal is kept clean. If however overtime, the colour becomes darker, a polishing cloth will help to bring the shine back.

All of the chains and ear wires are gold-filled. Gold-filled metal is when layers of 14k gold are bonded to a layer of brass metal.  Gold-filled is good for all skin types as it is hypoallergenic.  Gold-filled jewellery is about 100 times thicker than any gold-plated jewellery which allows it to last much longer. 

Certain chemicals such as perfumes, lotions and cleaning products can damage your jewellery. If you happen to get these substances on your jewellery, use a clean, damp cloth to wipe off.  Make sure to dry the jewellery afterwards.

Moisture can also affect bronze jewellery.  Keeping it dry is super important. Adding a silica gel pack to your jewellery box will help with moisture.

I thought London, England was my favourite city to visit.  But you know what, I fell in love with Rome! I had spent a couple of days in Rome a few years back. I travelled there while I was recovering from food poisoning that I got at a Blue Jays game. I wasn't off to a great start.

But this time around! My family and I visited Rome after Christmas and spent our time in the city with a couple of day trips. One was to Florence and one to Orvieto.

Where do you start?  There is so much history in Rome that you could spend days and days. When we were planning our trip, we decided to visit the Colosseum and the Vatican again. Both of these attractions are super popular and very busy. 

We booked tours through Viator for both of these places.  It does cost more money than going on your own. But if you want to avoid the long lines, it is super helpful. You can wait 2 to 3 hours to get into one attraction. There is so much to see inside the Vatican museum that you would miss, if you didn't have a guide. Both our guides for each of these tours were knowledgeable and entertaining.

Another famous attraction is the Trevi Fountain which I have now named the Trevi zoo! This year is the Catholic Jubilee. It is a year long celebration that occurs every 25 years. It brings so many more people to the Vatican. The Trevi Fountain was restored for this celebration.  You used to be able to  walk up to the fountain and take photographs but not now. You have to pay 2 Euros and wait in line.

Here is a really good tip. If you want to take photos of any of these three attractions, go there at night. We visited all three of them after 9pm and took photos without many others around. It was worth going back.

We walked everywhere. We were hesitant to use their subway transportation. A friend of ours wallet was almost stolen while he was on the train. Be extra careful at the Vatican too. Italians recommend wearing your backpack on the front of you when you are in large crowds.

When travelling to Rome in the winter, make sure to bring layers. During the day it was around 13 degrees Celsius but the evenings were cool.  It reminded me of  a desert climate.

There are many different neighbourhoods in Rome. I am going to highlight four of them.

CAMPO MARZIO

This neighbourhood is where you will find many attractions. There are the Spanish Steps that lead from the Piazza di Spagna square to the French monastery church  Trinita die Monti.

Further over is the Piazza del Popolo where you can see an Egyptian obelisk dedicated to Ramesses II. It's called Flaminio Obelisk, and it is located at the centre of the piazza. Many people come to this square to see famous churches or to walk up to the top to see the sunset.

The Trevi Fountain is also found in this neighbourhood. 

My favourite was the Pantheon. You need to buy tickets to enter but you can easily do it once in Rome. It's faster to purchase them online. The Pantheon was a former Roman temple and turned Catholic church. The circular dome on the top of the Pantheon has inspired architects to use it in many other churches.

MONTI

If you are looking to visit the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, you will find it in Monti. The Forum is the original village where the Romans lived. It's very close to the Colosseum. 

The Colosseum is the largest amphitheatre ever built. Titus finished building it 80AD and the first gladiator games came shortly after.  Seeing the Colosseum at night is beautiful with all the lights.

 TRASTEVERE

This neighbourhood is located across the Tiber River. On New Year's Day they have a competition where divers jump from a bridge into the cold water of this river. We witnessed it! They only wore a bathing suit.

It's a popular neighbourhood with history and wonderful restaurants. We went to a local restaurant called Fieramosca. It was recommended to us by our Chef at the cooking class. Great food in an old historic atmosphere.

ROME CENTRE

Just above Piazza Venezia is Il Vittoriano, Monumento a Vittorio Emanuele II. You can't miss it. Romans either love it or hate it. But if you are visiting, I highly recommend going there and purchasing the pass to take you up the to top. You get spectacular views of the Colosseum and the Forum. We did it in the morning when it wasn't as busy and you are not rushed.

If you are a foodie, this is the city to go! Pasta was ate every day and sometimes twice a day.

Rome has 4 favourite pasta dishes. They're found on every menu. They include Gricia, Cacio e Pepe, Carbonara and Amatriciana.

We decided to take a cooking class where we made pumpkin ravioli, homemade fettuccine, bolognese, and tiramisu. We booked it through Cookly.me but you can also find it at EnjoyCooking.com.

Chef Marco was entertaining and we were there for three hours. We learned how to make dough and used an electric pasta machine. We found  it's important not to overcook pasta otherwise it feels like glue in your stomach. They even had gluten free for me. I learned to make my own gnocchi.

Speaking of gluten free, they are so many options. Most restaurants will ofter gluten free pasta. We found gluten free restaurants that had two dedicated kitchens. One kitchen was  gluten free while the other was a regular one. I even had whole menus that could be made gluten free. You can locate these restaurants on the Italian Celiac Association.

I also found a gluten free grocery store called Celiachiamo LAB. I have never seen so many products in one place. We walked to it after visiting the Vatican in Prati. 

When in Rome you have to have gelato. One of my favourites is Grom as you can get gluten free cones and dairy free gelato. You really can't go wrong at any of the gelato shops.

FLORENCE

Before our trip we booked tickets through ItaliaRail to travel to Florence. We left early in the morning and arrived around 10am. We visited the Ufizzi Gallery which contains some of the most famous art created by Italian painters. If you wish to see the David statue, it is at the Galleria dell'Accdemia Di Firenze  which is closed on Mondays.

Another great attraction to see in Florence is their food hall called Mercato Centrale. It's absolutely insane at lunchtime. There are two levels.  We had lunch on the upper level and my family had one of the best pizzas on the trip there. 

If you looking for handmade leather goods, Florence is the place. But don't buy anything at the market when you come out of  Mercato Centrale. It's not authentic Italian.

Have you heard of wine windows? It's where you go up to a window in a historical building and order a glass of wine.  They became popular in the 16th century as wine growers could sell wine without paying taxes.  We visited one called Babae.

ORVIETO

What a little gem of a medieval village this town is. My husband and son discovered this place. We booked train tickets before we left for Rome on Trenitalia.  It's not as nice as the bullet trains! 
We bought a City Pass where we could visit a number of attractions without paying anything extra.

There were three highlights. The Duomo di Orvieto at the very top is absolutely stunning. We also visited St Patrick Well where you walk down 248 steps. It was built to provide water to the city in case of a siege. I recommend doing this right after you get off the train as it's close by. You do have to visit a kiosk to get your ticket even with the City Pass.

If you are looking for a stunning view of the city I recommend  Torre del Moro. Here you climb up to the top where they have their famous bell tower.

A must see is the Orvieto Underground.  You need to reserve a spot in a tour group which we did when we arrived.  If you are interested in doing this, I would recommend booking before you go to Orvieto. I think we got lucky.  

The Orvieto Underground is a maze of caves, wells and tunnels. They raised pigeons to provide them with a source of food. They also used the underground as an oil mill. Today some buildings above ground have their own private cave.

Not on our list that day was the discovery  of an outdoor market where I purchased a handmade labradorite necklace for myself!

Rome is going to be a busy destination this year because of the Jubilee.  If want to escape the crowds for a moment, walk inside one of the many Catholic churches. So peaceful!

Why is this important? You want to see if your customers are there. For example, a show with lots of children is my not my target audience because of what I sell.  In the end, you will save yourself time and money by choosing to go to another show.

Last year I told myself I wasn't going to do any shows until May. I had one fellow maker tell me she doesn't even start until June.

But I broke my rule and did one in April. Why? I was itching to get back out but it turned out it wasn't a worthwhile choice. 

At the end of the year market applications already start coming out. Make sure to decide when you want to start and stick to your decision.

This is important! Some applications are very detailed and competitive. Write it all out in another document and have someone proofread for you. Trust me it's worth the extra time.

Take your time and style your photos for success. Adding a prop or two to compliment what you sell goes along way.

Make sure your product is centred with your props peeking in from the sides.

Using Pinterest for ideas is really helpful.

Some applications ask you to submit photos within a certain size range. You are going to have to reduce the number of pixels. On my MacBook, I use Preview and then select Tools.  In the drop down menu I choose adjust size and then fill in the new width.

Most times when you are attending an event the space size changes and so does your set up. Last year I started printing pictures of my set ups. I take photos on my phone and print them on regular paper. I have a file folder now of different set ups from a 6 foot table to a full 10 foot by 10 foot space.  I take this folder with me and it makes setting up so much faster.

Broken chains can happen! Perhaps you tug on the chain or clasp a little too hard and it breaks. You have a pet who jumps up on you and their paw catches the chain. Maybe you have a pendant that's way too heavy for the chain. Today I want to share with you ways to help so your chains last longer.

When your chain gets knotted it causes a stiff point right before the knot. This pressure can put undue stress on the chain and cause it to break. If you happen to get a knot check out this BLOG to learn how to remove it.

Overtime the accumulation of body oils, creams and sweat can build up on your chain links and cause them wear down. Proper and regular cleaning of your jewellery is important.  Here are some ways to clean your jewellery in this BLOG.

When wearing necklaces or any type of jewellery, they should be put on after your are dressed and taken off before you undress. Chains can get caught in your outfit and with a couple of tugs, the chain can break.

Every so often you will get a defective clasp. It happens. Fortunately, there is an easy solution. You can open up the jump ring with pliers and add a new clasp yourself  or have a jewellery maker do it for you.

Whether you are taking your chain off at night or packing it up to travel, always store each chain in its own individual ziplock bag. These bags help to prevent silver jewellery from tarnishing and from chains getting tangled with each other. Here is a BLOG on how to store jewellery when you are travelling.

When you think of England, what comes to mind?  Royal palaces, museums, shopping, theatre and of course rain! But if you go in the summer months when it's warmer and less rainfall, you won't be disappointed.

In July, my family travelled to England to spend 10 days between London and the countryside of Somerset. Upon arrival, we picked up our car rental as we wanted to have the flexibility to discover quaint small towns and beautiful cliffs along the sea. Driving on the left side along narrow country roads  is not for the faint of heart. If you can easily drive in downtown Toronto then be confident you can do it there.

We began with 4 nights in the Somerset area and then 6 nights in downtown London (with a few side trips along the way). 

When I began researching areas to visit in England, I knew I wanted to head out of London for a few days. Somerset is only  a one hour drive from the city. We stayed just outside of Bradford-on-Avon. It's a cute town that's not too far for day trips.  They have an amazing Italian restaurant inside an old pub called Ravello.

After we arrived at the airport, we couldn't check into our accommodations until later in the afternoon, so we took a drive up to Oxford to see the infamous university town.  More to come on that.

Our first full day in Somerset we walked over 27,000 steps. We drove out to the town of Cheddar to see the magnificent Cheddar Gorge. We drove along the cliffs of this gorge into the town. The town is pretty touristy (reminded me of Niagara Falls) so we turned around and headed back along the road until we discovered a trail up to the top of the cliffs. The trail is called Black Rock and you can park on the side of the road. Once you climb the steps and walk along the trails you reach the top and the views are spectacular. There are wild goats wondering everywhere. So you had to make sure you watched where you stepped!

If you are on TikTok the next two eye catching areas you may have seen. Have you heard of the Jurassic Coast? It's a natural World Heritage Site that runs miles and miles along the South coast of England. It has beautiful landscapes that vary along the coastline with fossils and rocks. It's truly remarkable.

Man-O-War beach and Durdle Door are found just outside of Dorset. The views from the top are breathtaking. You can walk a trail down to the bottom and it's so worth it. We visited on a Monday and it was busy especially on the Durdle Door side. If we had more time, it would have been nice to pack a lunch and enjoy the beach for a few hours. Nearby there is a cove called Lulworth Cove. We were running out of time so we drove over to the town and walked up to the top to see the cove.

So everyone has heard of Stonehenge! But have you hard of Avebury? Yes, Avebury has a stone circle too in which we have no idea how it actually got there. I decided to skip Stonehenge on the recommendation of a fellow jewellery artisan. There are two circles of stones. One outer and one inner that are spread across a private farm. The cool thing about Avebury is you can actually touch the stones where Stonehenge they are roped off. It's much cheaper and so much less busy. I touched many stones but unfortunately none of them took me back to the late 1700's!

Before heading to Somerset, we took a little detour up to Oxford. The university reminded me of the University of Toronto as the buildings are spread out amongst the town. Most of the buildings are gated so we could only look through fences to see them. One of the main attractions here is Broad Street. It's the main street that runs through Oxford and it was bustling. Apparently it's always busy.  You can also do punting along the river which I don't recommend doing here. Way too busy and crowded. If you are wondering what punting is, keep reading about in Canterbury.

We arrived in Bradford-on-Avon and the city of Bath is only a 20 minute drive.  The Roman Baths are the main attraction here. I don't know what I was expecting as I hadn't read up on them.  After you get your ticket (which you can only do online), you walk in and see the main Roman Bath below.  But that's not all.  When they discovered the Baths in the 1800's, they took the artifacts and turned them into a museum which is actually underground. They believe the Bath's were built by the Romans in 70AD. The water is warm but as you can see in the photo you don't put in your hands in as it's filled with algae now.

While in Bath, we discovered three of the buildings that are used in the TV series Bridgerton.  The above photo is the Royal Crescent which is used often in this tv series for various shots.

Before heading into London, a trip to see Canterbury Cathedral was on the list. I have seen Westminster Abbey and St. Paul's Cathedral in London and this church in my opinion was way more beautiful.  The archways and stained glass windows were everywhere. It was originally built in the 597AD but was destroyed in fire in 1067. Rebuilding began in 1070AD.

In Canterbury, they also have punting boat rides along the Great Stour river. We stumbled upon Westgate Punts. It was a cloudy day with a bit of rain so we luckily got to take a boat ride in the afternoon. On a sunny day, they told us all the reservations are filled up by 11:30am. I highly recommend taking the nature and city tour as you learn about the history of the buildings along the river.

Before we left, we quickly did a walk around the shopping area. It reminded me of Harry Potter's Diagon Alley. The shops are very old and colourful. I came across a silver jewellery shop called 925 Silver and picked up some celestial hoop earrings.

There are many small villages in the Somerset area. If you have the time I recommend seeing Catherine Hill in Frome.

Are you a Harry Potter fan? If so, Warner Bros. Studio Tour London - The Making of Harry Potter I highly recommend.  Here you will see movie sets, costumes, green screen demonstrations, and more. This year Harry Potter The Prisoner of Azkaban sets are featured. 

Tickets need to be purchased well in advance as it's a very popular tourist attraction. Once you arrive, you can stay as long as you like. There are activities for children throughout the tour and lots of photo opportunities too.

If you are coming from London, you can drive or take The Underground to Watford. At Watford, a Harry Potter Double Decker bus picks you and takes you to the studios.

We spent 3 full days in London and covered as much as we could. It's a vast city with so many historical sites to see. Our first stop was the Tower of London.  We took a beefeater tour and learned the historical background of the Tower of London before we visited inside the White Tower where the armoury is located. One of my favourite attractions is The Crown Jewels.

The rain did come in London on and off. One of the nights we walked down to Buckingham Palace to see it lit up. There was no one around so we were able to take awesome photos of the palace. I highly recommend visiting attractions on nights like this.

If you are looking to see spectacular views of the city including Big Ben, then the London Eye ferris wheel is a must. They have a window between 2pm and 3pm where admission tickets are reduced by 30%. You need to purchase them online well in advance.

Have you heard of Hamley's? Think Paddington Bears everywhere. In London, it's a famous toy store where the flagship is located on Regent Street. It has 5 levels and it's filled with toys and demonstrations.  Other stores that will blow your mind in size are Harrod's, The Lego Store and the M&M's store.

​London is filled with museums. Admission is free and it's recommended to book your ticket online as you can be turned away if show up without pre-booking. They do ask for a donation when you enter the buildings. My son wanted to see The British Museum where the main attraction is The Rosetta Stone. If you love Egyptian, Roman and Greek history, then visiting this museum is recommended.
